A new study published in the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy analyzed the effect of prucalopride – a highly selective serotonin 5HT4 receptor agonist used for chronic constipation, for its ability to stimulate gastrointestinal peristalsis. This pilot study was undertaken the day before colonoscopy, followed by half volume of polyethylene glycol solution. From the findings of this study, it was concluded that prucalopride treatment can be an efficient and safe method, even in elderly patients, to achieve an adequate and better-tolerated colon cleansing prior to colonoscopy.1
